Waving Back Anyway

You ever wave at someone and then realize they weren’t waving at you?

Yeah. That moment. Embarrassment, and you’re the source. One second you’re out there feeling seen, part of the world — the next you’re just a guy grinning and waving at someone who was actually signaling the person behind you. Or chasing a bee off their face. Hard to say.

And what do we do? Most of the time, we freak out a little. Pretend we were stretching. Scratch our head. Try to casually blend into the nearest shrub.

It’s not exactly a highlight reel kind of moment.

Because it’s just so human. All of it. The mistake, the reflex, the tiny drop of shame, and then hopefully — hopefully — a laugh.

That’s the stuff life is made of. Not just the big wins or the “made it” days. It’s the dumb little stumbles. The time you ended a quick work call with “Love you” because five minutes earlier you were talking to your wife. Or told the cashier “You too” after they said “Enjoy the movie.” It’s weird. It’s awkward. It’s kind of beautiful.

Thing is, stuff’s hard sometimes. Life throws curveballs. Or just throws the whole bat. But deciding not to take yourself too seriously — that’s a game changer. You burn the toast? Great. It’s just extra crispy now. Maybe it’s a crunchy vehicle for jam. You trip over nothing? Maybe gravity just likes you more.

And when you can laugh — not in a fake, brushing-it-off way, but a real “ha, wow, that was dumb and I’m still standing” way — everything softens a bit. You feel lighter. Like maybe you’re not here to be perfect. Maybe you’re just here to be… here.

So yeah. Next time you wave at someone who wasn’t waving at you?

Wave back anyway. Own it. Smile like you meant it. Who knows — maybe someone out there saw you and thought, Hey, that guy seems like he’s having a good time.

And maybe that’s all it takes to turn a weird moment into a good one.
