Maybe They’re Running the Wrong Race.
We’ve all heard the phrase: Nice guys finish last. It’s usually spoken with a sigh, a shake of the head, or even a little bitterness. It’s the idea that if you’re kind, patient, and selfless, the world will take advantage of you. That ruthless ambition wins. That cutting corners and stepping on others is the only way to get ahead.
But maybe the problem isn’t that nice guys finish last. Maybe the problem is that we’ve misunderstood the race.
What Race Are You Running?
The world tells us that success is about being first. First in wealth, first in power, first in recognition. It’s about beating the competition, proving ourselves, making sure no one else gets ahead of us. But in the eyes of Christ, the race looks very different.
Jesus Himself said:
“But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.” – Matthew 19:30
That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t work hard or strive for excellence. It means that the race we should be running isn’t about earthly success—it’s about faithfulness, obedience, and serving others. The world’s race says, “Win at all costs.” God’s race says, “Love at all costs.”
The Kindness of Christ Was Not Weakness
Some hear nice guys finish last and assume that kindness is weakness. But Jesus, the ultimate example of kindness, was far from weak. He flipped tables in the temple when people turned worship into a business (Matthew 21:12-131). He confronted hypocrisy with boldness (Matthew 23:272). He stood silent when falsely accused because He knew His purpose (Isaiah 53:73).
Being nice doesn’t mean being passive. It doesn’t mean letting people walk all over you. It means being rooted in Christ, responding to injustice with righteousness, and treating others with the same grace we’ve been given.
Winning the Right Prize
At the end of life, the world won’t hand out trophies for “Most Money Earned” or “Biggest House Owned.” The real prize isn’t found in stock portfolios or applause—it’s in the words:
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” – Matthew 25:23
If our race is about impressing the world, we may end up winning in their eyes but losing where it matters most. But if our race is about honoring God, we will find a victory that no earthly title can match.
So, do nice guys finish last? Maybe in the world’s race. But in God’s kingdom? They’re exactly where they need to be.
Keep running the right race. The reward is worth it.
- 12 Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. 13 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’[a] but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’” ↩︎
- 27 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. ↩︎
- 7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. ↩︎
